Mixology 101

The Method

What do you call a Stratovarius in the hands of someone who can't play the violin? Wood.

There's no use having the proper equipment if you don't know how to use it. Here, then, is a crash-course in making beautiful music behind the bar.

Chilling

When possible, your cocktail and beer glasses should be nicely chilled before you use them. The simplest way of doing this is to place them in the refrigerator a few hours before use. However, if the fridge is filled to capacity with other necessities (Schweppes Tonic Water, Schweppes Club Soda, and Schweppes Ginger Ale, for instance) just fill each glass with cracked ice before mixing. When the drink is ready, simply pour out the ice, towel off the glass, and strain away.

Frosting

Quicker than chilling, to frost a glass, you simply dip it in cold water and place it in the freezer for about thirty minutes. Frosting is a sure-fire way of getting the coldest beer glass possible. The only trade-off is a slight diluting effect that occurs as the frost melts away inside the glass.
