Mixology 101
The Method
What do you call a Stratovarius in the hands of someone who can't play the violin? Wood.
Stirring
Stirring is the proper way to mix a drink that contains liquids of different densities, or any drink that uses a carbonated beverage as a mixer, such as
Schweppes Ginger Ale. Examples:
Martini, Manhattan, Rob Roy.
Shaking
This is the way to mix stubborn ingredients that don't much feel like being mixed, such as cream, sweet & sour, eggs, and fruit juices. Nothing bubbly here. Examples: Side Car, Bloody Mary, Sloe Gin Fizz. (For thicker, icier concoctions, such as daiquiris, use an electric blender.)
Pouring
When you're able to pour multiple drinks from the same cocktail mixer, your guests will know they're in the presence of a true mixmaster. You should be able to extract four or so cocktails from one mixing cup. Once they're ready to pour, fill each glass only halfway, then go back to the first and start again, to make sure everyone gets their fair share.
